THE opening of a new joint in town is always a welcome sign we were delighted to be among the invitees to auspicious event, took place of recent.

However, I must say that it takes extraordinary courage and a big gamble a restaurant on the second floor. Well, having said that, one of the most successful such ventures is the legendary Fang Fang Chinese Restaurant, situate in the Greenland Towers. However, this is another story altogether.

Thursday is located on two floors with a couple of dinning rooms and a terrace and the best part of it is the rooftop garden. There is an impressive bar, which can seat a few dinners, and a stage, which is designed for a small band. I for one think that outdoor dining on the roof terrace is very appealing and Ms Clare Namirembe the young and energetic manager assures me that they have big plans towards this endeavour.

For the time being, one will have to make do with a snack menu that has a few unusual items. Did you know that they serve hamburgers as well as cheeseburgers over at Thursday? It is rare to find a good burger in town, but what scared me off was the price. I really do think that sh7,000 with a plate of chips is unrealistic. The whole fish plain was a good choice as were the goat ribs. The former is sh4,000, while the latter is sh5,000 accompanied with chips.

I am a great lover of chicken wings and must declare that the chef had no business improvising with a part of chicken, (read wing) and then serving it cut up. Surely a little garlic and a few fried onions could only have improved the taste. I would have been perfectly happy to accept a chicken piece of my choice. Better luck next time.

And what is in a name, did Shakespeare not once remark? Thursday, we were told was chosen to remind toute le monde, that the weekend should begin on that Particular day. I will not regale you with the band that entertained us, whose name I cannot even recall. What we do remember is that they were unimpressive in their singing ability.

Thursday is planning a so-called boeuf menu (sic) which for some reason is le yet to take off. On paper, it is impressive and will cost all of sh5,000 per plate. Comprising 12 items, it will include matooke, beef stew, chicken stew, fried rice, peas, spaghetti and bunch of other items and to crown it all a glass of juice.

I would say, in all fairness, that given the venue of this place, the potential is enormous. The dining rooms are neat and comfortable and with the added benefit of the al fresco, part the sky is literally the limit. Sadly, nothing as far as I know, is being done to promote the place.

It has been a mere couple of weeks and Clare is full of optimism. I wish her all the best and hope that they will soon have many diners and revellers. By the way, they got rid of the old band.
