The dress code at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) tells it all. The university is built on a strong Islamic faith and lives by the word of the Koran. Timothy Makokha writes
Background
Female students don Islamic attire, with their head wrapped in hijab. But the university is home to Muslims and non-Muslims.
The university was started on the premises of Nkoma Secondary School, opening doors to students on February 10, 1988 with 80 students. The studies then were in the faculties of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language and Education.
Ownership: It is a private international university established by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The university is one of two universities in Africa whose idea was first mooted at an OIC meeting held in Lahore, Pakistan in 1974. The aim was to offer Muslems in Africa more educational opportunities. To date, the OIC, based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, remains a major benefactor.
Land: Has 35 acres of land donated by government. Recently government gave the university 300 more acres.
