MANDATE:

 

Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) is a Public Tertiary Institution. The institute was established to train and develop human resource needed for the effective and sustainable operation and management of Uganda 's ICT sector.

 

GOVERNANCE

 

The Institute initially owned and managed by Uganda Communications Commission, is now under the Ministry of Education and Sports and subject to the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001.

 

This follows the issuance of The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions (Establishment of Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology) Statutory Instrument No. 79 of 2005

establishing UICT as a public tertiary institution.

To be a leading center of excellence supporting ICT enabled human resource development in Uganda and beyond.

 

MISSION

 

To provide quality market driven and sustainable training, research and consultancy services that support the ICT sector.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

 

To train all round ICT professionals that have the potential to aid Uganda benefit from the ICT driven global economy. The programmes of the institute enable participants to:

 

_ Gain a foundation to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology, business and management fields.

_ Develop fundamental understanding of the major areas of computer science, information technology, telecommunication and business.

 

_ Keep abreast with the business and technological changes in the environment.

 

_ Acquire professional skills that will lead to developing a competitive advantage at the work place.

 

_ Improve on the managerial and technical skills at the work place.

 

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMS

 

UICT offers Diploma, Pre-diploma and short training programs. A participant who has enrolled for the Diploma and Pre-diploma program can also undertake the short training programs.

 

The institute has the department of Information and Communications Technology, and that of Management.

 

The Departments offer a variety of two- year Diploma and one-year Pre-diploma programs that run on a semester basis. An academic year has two semesters of 17 weeks each.

 

These programmes commence in September- October every academic year.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering 517,000=

Diploma in Computer Engineering 517,000=

Diploma in Information Technology (Science) 517,000=

Diploma in Information Technology (Business) 517,000=

Diploma in Computer Installation and Maintenance 517,000/=

Pre-Diploma in Engineering 330,000=

Entry requirements – Diploma

 

The minimum entry requirement for the diploma programs in the ICT department is:

 

a) Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Engineering (TE& CE)

 

_ Advanced level Certificate of Education (UACE) with one principal pass in either physics or math and good credit passes in math and/ or physics at ordinary level (UCE), or

 

_ A good UCE certificate with a credit in math and physics plus at least two years relevant professional experience or a certificate from a recognized institution.

 

b) Information Technology for Science (ITS)

 

_ Uganda Advanced level Certificate of Education (UACE) with one principal pass in any of the following subjects: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Food and Nutrition, Technical Drawing, Geography and Economics with a credit pass in Math or Physics at UCE or,

 

_ Good UCE certificate with a credit pass in Math or Physics plus at least two years relevant professional experience or a certificate from a recognized institution.

 

c) Information Technology for Business (ITB)

 

_ For the diploma in Information Technology for Business the principal pass at UACE may be in any other subject.

 

_ A good UCE certificate plus at least two years relevant professional experience or a certificate from a recognized institution.

 

d) Pre-diploma in Engineering

 

The minimum entry requirements for the prediploma programs in the ICT department are:

 

_ Uganda Advanced level Certificate of Education (UACE) with one subsidiary pass in either physics or math and good credit passes in math and physics at ordinary level (UCE) or,

 

_ A UCE certificate with relevant professional experience or a certificate from a recognized institution/

 

DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT

 

Diploma programs offered Program Tuition per semester*

Diploma in Human Resource Management 330,000=

Diploma in Project Planning and Management 330,000=

Diploma in Records and Archives Management 330,000=

Diploma in Business Administration 330,000=

 

Entry requirements

 

The minimum entry requirement for the Diploma programs in the Management department is:

 

_ Advanced level Certificate of Education (UACE) with one principal pass in a relevant subject or,

 

_ A good UCE certificate with at least two years relevant professional experience or a certificate from a recognized institution.

 

The duration of the certificate to be used for admission must be a minimum of one academic year or nine calendar months. The tuition fees given above do not include other administrative charges that are

paid by the student. Administrative charges depend on the Programme taken by the students, details of which can be got at the Institute.

 

SHORT COURSES

 

The Institute also offers short tailor-made packages and/or courses. Tailor-made packages to suit the individual and or organizational needs that can be arranged on request include:

 

_ Marketing techniques

_ Financial management

_ Business planning and management

_ Customer care

_ Managing your own business

_ Information technology

_ Computer Repair and maintenance

_ TV and radio maintenance

_ Radio call operations

_ C++

_ Microwave Technology

 

CISCO AND OTHER AFFILIATIONS

 

The institute is a Cisco Regional Networking Academy in Uganda . It has a 45-people laboratory for Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) students.

 

The institute is a testing center for international certification in ICT.

 

The Institute is authorized as a Virtual University Education center to deliver exams in international certification in Novel, Linux, Mssol and Navision, Microsoft, programs, Java etc UICT together with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), have established an Internet Training Centre (ITC) at UICT.
