To the New vision

Life at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono is an experience to be savoured. There are numerous developments taking place everyday, reports Timothy Makokha

Background
The Church of Uganda established UCU in 1997 after upgrading 84-year old Bishop Tucker Theological College to a university.

Legal status
Uganda Christian University is chartered by the Government of Uganda.

Location
The university main campus is located 23kms on Kampala- Jinja highway, off Mukono town.
It also has a constituent college at Kabale and two study centres in Arua and Mbale.
The main campus covers 67 acres of land.

Accommodation
Ten blocks of on-campus residential accommodation, one brand new. There is one in planning, for male students. There is also a brand new dining hall and kitchen, holding up to 700 for dining purposes and 800 for meetings and functions. Some hostels within are registered with the university
The new residential block has a lounge and a study area, which will also have a computer network. Various venues across campus hold social functions for students and staff, including a movie night at Nkoyoyo Hall every Friday night.
The Chaplaincy provides an extensive service to the community, both resident and non-resident. This is through services, meetings, discipleship and fellowships. These are both student and clergy-led.

Sports/ recreational facilities
Include a football, netball, Volleyball and handball fields. There are two basketball courts, a tennis court and a variety of in-door games.

Current enrollment
3921. Foreign students account for 5 percent and come from neighbouring countries. All students are self-sponsored. However, some students are sponsored under the university’s scholarship scheme.

Facilities
UCU has three libraries at the main campus, theology, main, and in the Technology Park. There is also a library at the Kampala campus, and libraries at the affiliated campuses.
There are about 51,522 titles comprising 17,489 core textbooks, 27,030 supplementary textbooks, 2,500 reference books, 4,503 literature and general reading books. Other academic volumes are available per programme/on-line journal.

ICT Policies:
Local Area Network at most study centres, Bishop Barham University College and Kampala campus are connected to UCU on 64k and 128k. There is one computer to every 12 students. UCU has an E-Learning platform on trial and also PERI membership.

Other facilities:
-Sixteen classrooms
-A 600-seater lecture hall
-Housing for 450 students, a health clinic, a library, archive and office building
-Two computer laboratories with over 150 work stations connected by broadband Internet connection. UCU is a CISCO Systems training site and offers international computer driving system.

Fees Structure
Fees structure (Under graduate courses):
Tuition ranges between sh450,000 to sh800,000 per semester.

Accommodation fee
sh400,000 per semester for Ugandans, Student with family sh750,000, international students without a family: $210 and international students with family: $395.
Other charges include:
Development - sh50,000
Medical - sh15,000
Guild - sh10,000
Computer - sh50,000
Examination - sh25,000.
Books - sh50,000.
