The Chairman, Board, Management and Staff of NUCAFE (National Union of Coffee
Agribusinesses and Farm Enterprises) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) for their 5 years service delivery and contribution
to the agricultural sector.
NUCAFE in collaboration with NAADS are implementing the Ministry of Finance, Planning and
Economic Development's farmer groups-associations - cooperative framework. Coffee farmers
in Kanungu and cocoa farmers in Bundibugyo are being empowered to adopt the concept of
ownership which involves both vertical and horizontal integrated value addition along the crop
chain. This enables the farmers to access market price and information and be able to negotiate
for better competitive prices for their value added products instead of being price takers.
This in itself is a step for farmers to move towards ownership over coffee and programmes for
rural wealth creation.
At the individual farmer level, farmers are empowered to adopt farming is business principle,
organize them into manageable business farmer groups which in turn are organized into marketing
associations to take advantage of economies of scale in accessing appropriate technologies,
credit, inputs to enhance quality and their bargaining power during marketing and procurement
of goods and services.
In collaboration with NAADS, Uganda Coffee Development Authority, (UCDA) Coffee Research
Institute (CORI), and International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) NUCAFE is working
with farmers in Kanungu, Rukungiri, Bushenyi, Masaka, Rakai, Mpigi, Wakiso, Luwero,
Mukono, Kayunga, Kapchorwa, Sironko, Mbale, Nebbi, Arua, Gulu and Manafa empowering
them to add value to their coffee; stop selling coffee flowers, unripe cherries, red cherries,
parchment and dried kiboko. Coffee farmers should at least sell Fair Average Quality (FAQ) coffee
to begin with and later exportable grades because at this stage they can compare prices of
FAQ or graded green coffee prices from other countries and use these prices as a basis for
price negotiation.
With NAADS/NUCAFE partnership rural wealth creation strategy is no longer a dream but a realistic
hope. We believe that farmers being owners over coffee and land which is the source of
wealth and life they do not have a reason to be poor. NUCAFE has found a lasting solution. We
call upon other stakeholders to join hands in implementing the ownership model as working
together poverty shall be history.
