Air Uganda marks one year

By Kikonyogo Ngatya

Air Uganda, the new regional carrier marked one year of service last month with a cocktail party for staff, partners and clients at their offices in Kololo, Kampala.

Mr Peter De Waal, the chief executive officer said the company would explore more avenues for expansion. He said while many people in the region have been using buses, the era of flying with comfort has been ushered in through affordable and quality airline services.

“Air Uganda is not a resurrection of the defunct Uganda Airlines. We are a completely new and independent international standard airline line operator where quality and safety is key,” Ms Desire Barugahare, the company public relations officer noted.

She said some Ugandans were confusing their company with the delays and inconveniences which dented the defunct Uganda Airlines.

It was on November 15, last year when Air Uganda successfully made its first commercial flights from Entebbe International Airport to Nairobi, Kenya and to Tanzania. The maiden flight was made from Entebbe to Nairobi and the second from Entebbe to Juba abode the airlines’ BC932 aircrafts.

“The flights were successfully launched with 30 passengers flying to Nairobi and more than 30 flying to Juba,” Mr Vittorio Scabbia, the commercial director of Air Uganda, said after the launch of the airlines inaugural flights.

Air Uganda now becomes the second East African airline to ply the lucrative Entebbe-Nairobi flight routes after Kenya Airways -which has dominated the route since the demise of Uganda Airlines.

So far, Air Uganda has managed to schedule its flights to Nairobi to 4.30 pm daily.
